New year's resolutions

Every year, I like to take stock of what's happened in the last 365 days.  What worked?  What didn't?  What do I need to change?

This year, I pinpointed the kind of clients I want to work with and the kind of projects I want to take on.  I was also able to find out what kind of things I don't want to work on.  This results in a better service for my clients, as I write best when I'm fully involved, engaged and excited about the subject.

So what needs to change for 2023?

I want to read more fiction and more books on copywriting.  I believe in order to be a better writer, you have to be a good reader - plus I find it a soothing way to unwind and slip into another world.

Improve badminton
I've been fortunate enough to enter a few local badminton events and I want to keep on improving.

Get fitter
Last year, my resolution was to get fit.  Now, it's to get fitter.  I've surprised myself with what I've been able to achieve and I want to keep on getting fitter.

And what about work-related goals?

Expand my portfolio
Well, they're still the same as last year, unfortunately.  Jaguar Land Rover have yet to approach me to ask for copywriting help, although I live in hope.

On a more serious note, I would like to expand the list of agencies I freelance for.  I love agencies that do things a little bit differently, so Lucky Generals, Bright Signals and Accenture are all on my wish list.

Work with exciting local people
As well as agencies, I'd like to take on occasional work for exciting local people and small businesses.  There are so many dynamic businesses on the Isle of Skye and further afield - and, of course, I do offer a local discount.

Be appreciative
I often get so focused on where I want to be and how to get there that I forget to stop and appreciate what's happened and where I am.  So, I'd like to make sure I'm always grateful for everyone who has taken time and energy to help me.

A final point: I've found I meet my goals better when I prioritise the important ones and don't overwhelm myself with an exhaustingly-long list!

What are your goals for 2023?  What did you achieve that you were proud of?
